About Us
Tender Funerals is a not-for-profit funeral service. Our vision is for all Australians to have access to affordable and meaningful funerals. We also provide community education and empowerment around after-death care. Tender Funerals was featured on Australian Story in 2022 in the episode 'A Community Undertaking'.
Tender Funerals Canberra Region will open at our new home at 49 Laverton Ave, Fairbairn, in August 2024.
As a community, we tend to avoid talking about and planning for dying, death and funerals. Yet, many of us are unable to afford even a $2000 unexpected expense. When funerals in Canberra can average from $6,000 (for a basic cremation with service) to $16,000 or more (for a basic burial), funerals can cause great financial and emotional distress for many families.
It doesn’t have to be like this.
Our model is very simple. People choose to use Tender either because they want or need to reduce their costs, or because they like our overall approach of choice, involvement and control.
Regardless of why you want to use Tender, all our funerals are charged at cost. Whatever it costs us to provide the funeral director, casket, space to hold a service, or whatever else you need, is what we charge. Families who can afford to, make a donation to our Pay It Forward benevolent fund, which goes towards reducing or waiving the costs for families who can’t afford it. This, combined with our volunteer involvement, is how strong community support lies at the heart of how Tender operates.
How your donation will help
Purchasing a specialised transport vehicle
Buying furniture and other items to create warm, welcoming family spaces, like our arrangement rooms, wash and dress rooms and viewing rooms
Buying equipment and supplies for our community outreach programs
Every dollar you donate helps reduce the cost without compromising on a meaningful funeral for a family in need.
If you have goods or services you’d like to donate in-kind, please contact us at canberra@tenderfunerals.com.au
