About Us
Rebus Theatre creates social change through powerful, inclusive theatre and film. We run theatre and film programs with marginalised communities, create original performances and deliver theatre-based accessibility and inclusion workplace training.
Theatre and film are uniquely powerful. They can bring about change, in an individual, a community, or a whole society. They engage the body and the emotions, as well as the mind. They make deeper and more lasting change possible. The stage and screen are places where we can imagine any reality, any future. They are where we can be the change we want to see in the world.
We practice radical empathy through theatre and other arts to stimulate healing and provoke social and environmental change. We aim to create a sustainable and ethical society that is inclusive, creative, compassionate and accessible to everyone. Together with our donors and friends, Rebus is embarking on a bold new path to reach more of our marginalised than ever before.
How your donation will help
‘Acting Out: On Screen’ is a free school holiday filmmaking program for LGBTQIA+ young people led by two drama tutors and two trained support workers, all of whom identify as LGBTQIA+. The mentors guide the participants in writing, directing, shooting and editing their original short film.
During previous programs, participants formed solid bonds quickly, sharing stories about experiences of being misgendered or bullied in school and developing social groups that continue connection beyond the program.
This program received seed funding grants which have now expired. We have since successfully fundraised to keep it running at delivered our 4th program in 2023. With your help, and matched funding support from Hands Across Canberra and SpringOUT Pride Festival, we hope to continue and expand the program to reach even more LGBTQIA+ young people.
For each program, 100% of parent and participant respondents reported that participants enjoyed the program, made new friends, developed film/acting skills and appreciated that staff created a safe, inclusive environment.
Here is some feedback from some of the teenage participants:
- “It was so so good and really important, spaces like these are pretty rare, it was amazing to have a program full of queer and neurodivergent people. We already have ideas for next year and everyone is really looking forward to next year!”
- “This program is amazing and I hope it can happen again for more people”
Here is some feedback from the parents of our participants:
- “I've watched my teenager struggle with mental health and low confidence. LGBTQI+ youth peer groups and activities in the arts have been catalyst and instrumental in helping my teenage child find joy, meaning, confidence, and healthy mental health back into their life, more than therapy or medication. It's programs like this that are making real positive impacts”
- “This is a cultural and creative necessity for our community it promotes respect, inclusiveness and embraces diversity and tells young people they are supported and welcome in the arts/film (and beyond)”
Here's what 'Acting Out On Screen' Participant Kesh Bates had to say about how the program has inspired them to pursue Directing as a career:
