About Us
Music for Canberra is a not-for-profit organisation that provides access to high quality, inspiring, innovative, and diverse musical experiences for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities in the ACT and surrounding regions. Music for Canberra offers a variety of programs, including ‘Music Play’ groups for early childhood music education, ‘Mixed Abilities Programs’ for people living with a disability, children’s choirs, including the ‘Canberra Children’s Choir’, ‘Seasoned Voices’ choir for older adults, and an orchestral program which provides an educational pathway to the Canberra Youth Orchestra.
How your donation will help
The rising cost of living means many of our enthusiastic and talented learners are struggling to continue participating in our music programs. Your generous donations will allow us to provide scholarships and additional financial support to those in our community who are passionate about music. Their dreams and aspirations are important to us.
Tuition and memberships fees only cover 63% of our annual costs, so we rely on your philanthropic donations. Your support helps keep our tuition fees affordable and gives us the opportunity to present free events for the community. All donations are greatly appreciated and make a real difference to what we do each day. No gift is too small, and every dollar makes a difference! All donations $2.00 and over are tax deductible and you will receive a tax invoice indicating the amount of the donation. Community support allows Music for Canberra to continue to grow and to deliver high quality programs and performances to a wider audience.
"In my six years of playing in the Canberra Youth Orchestra, I have most definitely become a better musician. I’ve made so many friends and unforgettable memories starting from the back desk of 2nd violins in year 7 to where I am now, 6 years later as concertmaster. Canberra Youth Orchestra will always have a special place in my heart."
Maddie Nelson, Concertmaster of Canberra Youth Orchestra 2023

As a former member of Music for Canberra when in was the Canberra Youth Orchestra Society, I truly benefited as a musician. I played symphonies and other reputable works with my peers, some of which went on to professional careers and outstanding conductors. I commenced in the James McCusker Orchestra in the mid 1980s and progressed to the Canberra Youth Orchestra to play in the 19 International Festival of Youth and Music in Vienna in 1990, our orchestra winning three prizes. When I returned from tour, I joined the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and played with this organisation for about five years. I became a violin teacher as a result of part of this wonderful experience. I would like to help MfC in their fundraising to give other students the opportunity to be part of such an exceptional group which has left me with tender memories.
