Canberra Community Law (CCL) is an independent community legal centre. CCL has been part of the Canberra community for almost 40 years. During this time, we have responded to the changing and increasing legal needs of people in the ACT with trauma-informed and culturally responsive services.
 
We are the only community legal service in the ACT providing specialist public housing, social security, and disability discrimination legal services completely free of charge. We also provide specialist legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through our Dhurrawang program. We help people facing homelessness through our Street Law program. We also operate an evening advice service in most areas of law not covered by our daytime services.

Our legal team collaborates with our social worker and disability justice liaison officer to offer intensive support to people who have multiple barriers to resolving their legal issues. These barriers include insecure accommodation, historical or current experiences of family violence, or being socially isolated.

We are a small team of lawyers, a social worker, admin staff and volunteers. We collaborate with a network of other community services.

As well as helping individuals through legal services, we run community legal education projects and advocate for better laws and policies.

Our targeted support empowers both our clients and the broader community to live a better quality of life.

How will your donation help?

CCL provides critical legal assistance that can empower people to understand their rights and access the support services they are entitled to receive. Our client group includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, people with disability, clients experiencing family or domestic violence and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Your donation will assist us to provide the following services:

$100 - emergency legal assistance to help people access urgent accommodation

$150 - advice to woman escaping domestic violence at a refuge about housing debt incurred as a result of this violence

$200 - visit to a person with a disability for advice about income support

$1200 - intensive social and legal work to help a client deal with their legal issues so that they can be addressed before they become crippling
