Established in 1921, Barnardos Australia is a leading child protection and family welfare charity, providing support to approximately 14,000 children, young people and their families throughout NSW and the ACT every year. We work together with children, young people and families to break the cycle of disadvantage, creating safe, nurturing and stable homes, connected to community. Our intensive support programs combat family and domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, poverty and homelessness, to strengthen families and keep children safe at home. When this is not possible, we provide safe homes for children through foster care and kinship care or facilitate open adoptions, giving children the permanency and security they need, for life. We invest heavily in early-intervention initiatives to prevent family issues forming or escalating. Tailored programs seek to strengthen knowledge, skills and capacity in areas including education, parenting, employment, mental health, financial literacy, resilience and identity.
How your donation will help?
Queanbeyan Homework Club supports vulnerable Aboriginal children aged 5-12 by providing an after-school care program in a safe and nurturing environment where qualified and experienced staff work with families to ensure children are happy and supported to reach their full potential. The Homework Club is held at four Queanbeyan primary schools. Children receive support with tutoring, homework, health, wellbeing and general education. Children also enjoy cultural learning, creative activities, sporting activities, dance, music and education in social skills and empowerment. While there is a focus on improving literacy and numeracy and preparing children for a successful entry into high school, the overarching aim is to break the cycle of disadvantage for these children by improving their overall educational and wellbeing outcomes. In addition to tailored educational and cultural support, the program provides a soft entry into other family support services. Respected and trusted staff can refer at-risk or vulnerable children and parents to Barnardos Family Support or other services as required, providing a holistic service to those who need help with issues such as poverty, homelessness, violence, substance misuse, unemployment or social isolation.
