Reading Out of Poverty (ROOP) promotes literacy skills in early childhood and provides literacy resources and support services to families with young children, aged 0-5, from low socio-economic backgrounds, including migrants, refugees, and Indigenous individuals.
We provide a strong foundation for children to learn to read and to promote language skills and literacy for children, beginning at birth, and to support parents as their child’s first teachers.
The key activities of ROOP are our Books from Birth program, Pop-Up libraries, ‘Read, Learn, Play activities, and Read-Aloud story sessions. Our programs utilise our volunteer network to assist with implementation.
How we will use funds raised
During the past 18 months, children from low-income homes have encountered several challenges during the pandemic. It has been a confusing and turbulent time for most, but especially for children who were trying to learn to read during the critical window between 3-6 years old.
Research is showing that nearly 41% of children from low-income postcodes have stalled in their reading development over 2020 and 2021. They will remain a poor reader unless they receive additional support, books, and tutoring. A staggering 61% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds do not own a single book at home.
We need your support to overcome this Word Gap and equip these children with school readiness skills and literacy resources.
We are partnering with medical centres, playgroups, and community centres to deliver books and literacy packs to children, plus provide specialised literacy tutoring. Without any effective intervention, these children face a lifelong battle with illiteracy which often is linked to poverty and poor social and economic outcomes in their adult life.
