About Us

Children have been, and always are at the centre of everything that we do. At Barnardos, we aim to protect children who are at risk of abuse, neglect or danger by supporting families to keep children and young people safe at home before the issues escalate. We support children and young people who have experienced trauma to recover and thrive. We connect children, young people and families to the community to ensure they never feel isolated or alone. We give children, young people and families the tools to cope with life’s challenges and improve their wellbeing. We motivate children, young people and their families to embrace learning and education so they can reach their brightest future and be on equal footings with their peers. We amplify the voices of young people to influence Government on the issues that affect their lives. We celebrate diversity and encourage children, young people and families to embrace their culture, history and identity. We are fearlessly optimistic that we can achieve brighter futures for vulnerable and disadvantaged Australian children.

How your donation will help?

Queanbeyan Homework Club supports vulnerable Aboriginal children and teenagers by providing an after-school care program in a safe and nurturing environment where qualified and experienced staff work with families to ensure children are happy and supported to reach their full potential. The Homework Club is held at four Queanbeyan primary schools. Children receive support with tutoring, homework, health, wellbeing and general education. Children also enjoy cultural learning, creative activities, sporting activities, dance, music and education in social skills and empowerment. While there is a focus on improving literacy and numeracy and preparing children for a successful entry into high school, the overarching aim is to break the cycle of disadvantage for these children by improving their overall educational and wellbeing outcomes. In addition to tailored educational and cultural support, the program provides a soft entry into other family support services. Respected and trusted staff can refer at-risk or vulnerable children and parents to Barnardos Family Support or other services as required, providing a holistic service to those who need help with issues such as poverty, homelessness, violence, substance misuse, unemployment or social isolation.
