About Us
Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) was founded in 1966 and is the largest provider of autism specific services in Australia. Next to autism specific education through our nine schools, we provide a range of other services to autistic individuals of all ages including diagnostic assessments, early years support, speech and occupational therapy, behaviour support, autism awareness and capacity building workshops for the wider community, employment support, a life skill program for autistic adults with complex support needs, autism friendly events and initiatives for Australian businesses and organisations as well as research which helps us to apply the latest knowledge and evidence to our services and programs for best practice. We work in partnership with autistic people throughout our organisation, in governance, research, service planning and service delivery.
How your donation will help
Through the Canberra Day Appeal 2023, we are hoping to raise funds for our Aspect Therapy hub in Scullin. Since 2015, our hub provides speech therapy, occupational therapy, behaviour support and capacity building to autistic children and young people aged 2 to 16 and their families and carers. Our hub which is operated out of an old pre-school site includes an outdoor play area where our participants can be with friends, be active, seek some quiet space, practice skills such as ball skills and playing team games, can meet their sensory needs and regulate their emotions as well as need for movement. Moving forward, we would also like to use this space for group sessions such as playgroups or dance and movement programs which could be provided to families at no cost given that funding for these activities is available. These group sessions will help reduce social isolation and exclusion by connecting children with an autism diagnosis and their parents and carers with other families whilst providing a safe and inclusive space to try new activities and prepare for a successful transition into mainstream leisure and play groups.
